Welcome to Citizens of the Great Plains

Protecting the Earth is the most critical thing we can do. Out here on the Great Plains, our ecological devastation mirrors our social devastation. By committing to hard work and service now, people can have vital, deep, rich lives again.

"Why the Great Plains?"

All of society's problems stem from a culture of separateness. Humans live largely separate from each other in set groups, separate from the interconnected imperative of the ecosystems we inhabit, separate from even our own bodies and health. This is particularly evident on the Great Plains. Out here in Flyover Country, in many ways we've already reached the brink of ecological collapse. So any work to recover is model and metaphor for people and bioregions everywhere that are now starting to face some of the same problems. If we have a history of sorrow and devastation, we can have a present and future of healing and renewal. The Great Plains offers a horizon-stretching opportunity for all of us to build a future of possibility, a promise of fertility, and honor the power of life still.

My Honors Project

If anyone is interested, here is my undergrad honors project that I wrote about restoring prairie and oak savanna. I haven't read it for many years, but I think the topic is still relevant. HonorsProject.pdf

Hope it can be opened!

Introduction

I thought I'd added a blog post to go with my album--Youth Outdoors in Mounds Park--but I must have forgotten to publish it. Still getting used to the site I guess!

I grew up in St. Paul, Minnesota, went to college here, went to Japan to teach English for two and a half years, then came back almost exactly a year ago to pursue the life work I had left behind in my desire to travel--Prairie Restoration and Conservation. In college I majored in Environmental Studies, and wrote an undergrad Honors… Continue

Job Post: Seeking Urban Wildlife Field Technician

Do you want to change the inhumane methods used to deal with urban wildlife? Do you want to confront the apathy towards our four-legged and two-legged brothers and sisters? Do you live in Tarrant County?

911 Wildlife is changing the way wildlife is treated across the Metroplex. We do not use traps! We do not use chemicals!

We are seeking a wildlife field technician to join our team. The hours are flexible; the team is exceptional. This company is owned by a wildlife rehabilitator who is one of… Continue

Hello/Update from Jarid

Hi Everybody,

I'm glad to see people starting to talk -- this site is set up for you, and I encourage you to spread the word, expand the dialog, and become leaders yourselves. We've got 100 years of work to do in the next 20 to 30.

It is especially time now for you to raise your voices, because our region still is considered to have no value in the general public's eye. Yet if we show that we ourselves value our "Prairie Earth" (what little is left) then we will attract increased interest and… Continue

Kansas

Greetings GPRC-folk. I've been pondering how circumstances in Kansas could be engaged for a general healing experience -- lord knows we need it here, too. Several things come to mind that might be useful to beginning to think about the GPRC in Kansas. One is the article in the High Plains Journal of February 2004 that quotes former Governor Mike Hayden's admission that he was very skeptical of the Buffalo Commons notion, but that he had come to the conclusion that it was inevitably going to happ… Continue
